Taxonomy
Pitar (Pitarella) chiraensis was named by Olsson (1931). It is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is 3-4 miles north of Casa Saman, Chira Valley, which is in a Priabonian marine shale/ash in the Chira Formation of Peru.
It was recombined as Pitar chiraensis by Olsson (1931) and Olsson and Richards (1961); it was recombined as Agriopoma (Pitarella) chiraensis by Hendy et al. (2008).
