Clavellofusus was named by Grabau (1904) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than T Plio Sepkoski's reference number: 614]. Its type is Clavellofusus spiratus.

It was assigned to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Fusininae by Snyder (2003); and to Fasciolariinae by Harzhauser et al. (2009).
