Modiola cinnamomea was named by Lamarck (1819) [DISTRIBUTION: ?Oligocene-Recent; Cosmopolitan]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Modiolus (Botula) cinnamomeus by Dall (1898) and Cooke (1919); it was recombined as Botula cinnamomeus by Hendy et al. (2008).
