Taxonomy
Oreaster bulbiferus was named by Forbes (1848). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Geological Survey of Great Britain.

It was recombined as Pentaceros bulbiferus by Valette (1902) and Spencer (1905); it was recombined as Stauranderaster bulbiferus by Spencer (1907), Spencer (1908), Spencer (1913), Valette (1915), Mercier (1935), Mercier (1936) and Schulz and Weitschat (1971); it was recombined as Aspidaster bulbiferus by Spencer and Wright (1966), Breton (1978) and Helm (1997); it was recombined as Manfredaster bulbiferus by Villier et al. (2004).

L. Villier et al. 2004Disk highly domed. Arms triangular, high. Primary interradial plates large, highly domed with a conical to rounded external face and a lobate, thick base. Abactinal plates, lobate, punctuated of varying size. R/r ratio nearly equals to two. In external view, radial plates of the arm hexagonal near the arm tip and T-shape in the constricted part of the arm. External face of plates with a depressed margin and raised central area with large granule pits.
