Pectunculus mississippiensis was named by Conrad (1848) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Oligocene; Gulf Coastal Plain.]. Its type specimen is ANSP 30667, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Axinaea mississippiensis by Conrad (1865); it was recombined as Glycymeris mississippiensis by Dall (1898), Gardner (1945) and Dockery (1982).
