Murex corona was named by Gmelin (1791) [DISTRIBUTION: Pleistocene-Recent; Caribbean.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Melongena (Rexmela) corona by Olsson and Harbison (1953), DuBar (1958) and Petuch and Roberts (2007); it was recombined as Melongena corona by Hendy et al. (2008).
