Taxonomy
Modiola mississippiensis was named by Conrad (1848) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Oligocene; Gulf Coastal Plain.]. Its type specimen is ANSP 30646, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Vicksburg, which is in a Rupelian marine marl in the Byram Marl Formation of Mississippi.
It was recombined as Perna mississippiensis by Conrad (1866); it was recombined as Modiolus (Brachydontes) mississippiensis by Dall (1898); it was recombined as Modiolus mississippiensis by Cooke (1922); it was recombined as Brachidontes mississippiensis by Mansfield (1940), Gardner (1945) and Dockery (1982).
