Cotonopsis was named by Olsson (1942) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 890]. It is extant. Its type is Strombina (Cotonopsis) panacostaricensis.

It was reranked as Strombina (Cotonopsis) by Houbrick (1983) and Petuch (1988).

It was assigned to Strombina by Houbrick (1983) and Petuch (1988); to Columbellidae by Jung (1989) and Todd (2001); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pyreninae by Monsecour and Monsecour (2005).
