Taxonomy
Tellina proficua was named by Pulteney (1799) [DISTRIBUTION: Pleistocene-Recent; Western Atlantic.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Semele.

It was recombined as Semele proficua by DuBar (1971) and Woodring (1982).
