Mesopalaeaster ketleyi was named by Spencer (1916). Its type specimen is Holotype BU 674 and is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Siluraster ketleyi by Herringshaw et al. (2007).

L. G. Herringshaw et al. 2007Hudsonasterid with primary circlet of large, somewhat irregular primary radials and interradials abutting directly against proximal superomarginals and carinals. Superomarginals and inferomarginals round in shape, primary carinals more angular and slightly smaller in size; separated by numerous minor carinals. Small, circular, radially grooved madreporite present in aboral interradius.
