Cryptoconus was named by Koenen (1867) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-u T Eo-u].

It was reranked as Pleurotoma (Cryptoconus) by Noetling (1895).

It was assigned to Pleurotoma by Noetling (1895); to Cryptoconinae by Sohl (1964) and Squires (1987); to Turridae by Squires (1988); to Conidae by Vredenburg (1921) and Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
