Cryptorhytis was named by Meek (1876) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 909]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Piestochilus (Cryptorhytis) by Gliozzi and Malatesta (1983).

It was assigned to Fusininae by Sohl (1964); to Piestochilus by Gliozzi and Malatesta (1983); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Fasciolariinae by Snyder (2003).
