Mytilus exustus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: North Carolina-West Indies (Recent); South Carolina-Florida (Pleistocene).]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Brachidontes (Brachidontes) exustus by DuBar (1958); it was recombined as Brachidontes exustus by Olsson (1953), Richards (1962), Richards et al. (1969) and Rosenberg (2005).
