Cymatophos was named by Pilsbry and Olsson (1941) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 553]. It is extant. Its type is Cymatophos galerus.

It was reranked as Phos (Cymatophos) by Keen (1971).

It was assigned to Phos by Keen (1971); to Buccinidae by Todd (2001); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
