Dolicholatirus was named by Bellardi (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes-l T Mi Sepkoski's reference number: 909]. Its type is Turbinella bronni.

It was assigned to Fasciolariinae by MacNeil (1960) and Wilson (1994); to Fasciolariidae by Ladd (1982) and Todd (2001); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Peristerniinae by Snyder (2003).
