Ecphora was named by Conrad (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u T Plio-l Sepkoski's reference number: 123,909]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Purpuridae by Martin (1904); to Ecphorinae by Petuch (1992); to Rapaninae by Sohl (1964) and Ward (1992); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
