Orthoceras knoxensis was named by McChesney (1859). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Pseudorthoceras.
It was recombined as Pseudorthoceras knoxense by Miller et al. (1933), Miller and Thomas (1936), Miller and Youngquist (1947), Miller and Youngquist (1949), Hoare (1961), Winters (1963), Gordon (1964) and Kröger and Mapes (2005).
