Taxonomy
Lepidosternum floridana was named by Baird (1858). It is extant. It is the type species of Rhineura.

It was recombined as Rhineura floridana by Cope (1861), Cope (1875), Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Yatkola (1976) and Maddox and Wall (1998).
