It was reranked as the order Proteida by Cope (1875); it was misspelled as Proteidea by Naylor (1978), Naylor (1979), Estes (1981) and Carroll (1988); it was corrected as Proteida by Shishkin (2000).

It was assigned to Batrachia by Cope (1875); to Urodeles by Carroll (1988); and to Caudata by Naylor (1978), Naylor (1979), Estes (1981) and Shishkin (2000).
