Conocardium peculiare was named by Girty (1910). Its type specimen is USNM 119981, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is USNM 3651A-C. along south bluff hill., which is in a Meramecian marine shale in the Fayetteville Formation of Arkansas.
It was recombined as Apotocardium peculiare by Wagner (2023).
