Monodonta elegans was named by Faujas (1817) [DISTRIBUTION: Oligocene-Early Miocene; Italy, Turkey, Oman. ]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Tectarius elegans by Lozouet (1986) and Harzhauser (2007).
