Strombus fortisii was named by Brongniart (1823) [DISTRIBUTION: Eocene; Italy.]. It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Dilatilabrum.

It was recombined as Dilatilabrum fortisii by Cossmann (1904) and Harzhauser et al. (2009).
