Murex melongena was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Caribbean.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Melongena.

It was recombined as Melongena melongena by Schumacher (1817), Barrios (1960), Petuch and Roberts (2007) and Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
