Mammites was named by Laube and Bruder (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 716]. Its type is Ammonites nodosoides. It is the type genus of Mammitidae.
It was reranked as Acanthoceras (Mammites) by Boule et al. (1907).

C. W. Wright et al. 1996 | Inner whorls trapezoidal to almost rectangular or square, with moderate to very strong tuberculation; venter slightly concave, flat, or with slight siphonal ridge. Outer whorls with fewer tubercles and with inner and outer ventrolaterals fused, in most species, into large horns directed sideways or obliquely upward. Suture moderately incised, variable, with first lateral lobe narrower than external saddle. |
