Taxonomy
Mammites was named by Laube and Bruder (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 716]. Its type is Ammonites nodosoides. It is the type genus of Mammitidae.

It was reranked as Acanthoceras (Mammites) by Boule et al. (1907).

It was assigned to Acanthoceras by Boule et al. (1907); to Mammitidae by Benavides-Caceres (1956); to Acanthoceratidae by Zaborski (1987); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mammitinae by Chancellor (1982), Cobban and Hook (1983), Kennedy et al. Diagnosis

C. W. Wright et al. 1996Inner whorls trapezoidal to almost rectangular or square, with moderate to very strong tuberculation; venter slightly concave, flat, or with slight siphonal ridge. Outer whorls with fewer tubercles and with inner and outer ventrolaterals fused, in most species, into large horns directed sideways or obliquely upward. Suture moderately incised, variable, with first lateral lobe narrower than external saddle.
