Citharina was named by d'Orbigny (1839) [Sepkoski's age data: J Toar-l T Than-u Sepkoski's reference number: 79,148]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Nodosariidae by Fischer (1969) and Loeblich and Tappan (1984); and to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002).
