Meretrix dariena was named by Conrad (1855) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene; circum-Caribbean.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Clementia dariena by Toula (1909), Brown and Pilsbry (1911), Olsson (1922) and Clark and Durham (1946); it was recombined as Clementia (Clementia) dariena by Woodring (1925), Weisbord (1929), Anderson (1929), Barrios (1960), Olsson (1964), Woodring (1982), Perrilliat (1992) and Perrilliat (1994).
