Heteroterma was named by Gabb (1869). It is extant. Its type is Heteroterma trochoidea.

It was assigned to Perissityidae by Popenoe and Saul (1987); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tudiclidae by Zinsmeister (1983) and Stilwell et al. (2004).
