Dermomurex was named by Monterosato (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 852]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Muricinae by Vokes (1975) and Wilson (1994); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Muricidae by Petuch (1988), Todd (2001), Landau et al. (2007) and Darragh (2017).
