Voluta oliva was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Indo-Pacific.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Oliva (Oliva) oliva by Drez (1981); it was recombined as Oliva oliva by Lamarck (1799), Jensen (1996), Tomida and Nakamura (2001) and Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
