Murex subcristatus was named by d'Orbigny (1850) [DISTRIBUTION: Middle Eocene; Europe.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Crassimurex subcristatus by Merle (1990); it was recombined as Poirieria subcristata by Vokes (1971), Jeffery and Tracey (1997) and Merle and Pacaud (2002).
