Janiopsis was named by Rovereto (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Plio Sepkoski's reference number: 705,914].

It was assigned to Pisaniinae by Givens and Kennedy (1976); to Buccinidae by MacNeil (1960) and Adegoke (1977); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
