Kestocenebra was named by Vermeij (1998) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-l T Mi-u-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1272]. Its type is Murex curvicosta.

It was assigned to Ocenebrinae by Vermeij (1998); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
