Alcithoe was named by Adams and Adams (1853) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R Sepkoski's reference number: 614]. It is extant. Its type is Voluta pacifica.

It was assigned to Zidoninae by Darragh (1989); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
