Liomesus was named by Stimpson (1865) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R Sepkoski's reference number: 614]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Liomesinae.

It was assigned to Liomesinae by Fischer (1884); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Liomesini by Bouchet et al. (2005).
