Mariafusus was named by Petuch (1988) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1039]. Its type is Siphonalia marylandica.

It was assigned to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Fasciolariinae by Petuch (1988) and Snyder (2003).
