Mataxa was named by Wade (1916) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-u K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 4]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cancellariidae by Sohl (1964), Sohl (1964) and Squires and Saul (2003).
