Taxonomy
Murex (Pleurotoma) cataphractus was named by Brocchi (1814) [DISTRIBUTION: Oligocene-Recent; Mediterranean, Pakistan.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Dolichotoma cataphracta by Bellardi (1877); it was recombined as Genotia (Bathytoma) cataphracta by Rovereto (1900); it was recombined as Bathytoma cataphracta by Sacco (1904), Vredenburg (1925), Harris and Palmer (1947) and Baluk (2003).
