Megasurcula was named by Casey (1904) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 96,555]. It is extant. Its type is Pleurotoma (Surcula) carpenteriana.

It was reranked as Surculites (Megasurcula) by Grant and Gale (1931); it was reranked as Acamptogenotia (Megasurcula) by Hickman (1976).
