Solanocrinites was named by Goldfuss (1829) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath K Albi Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Solanocrinites costatus.

It was corrected as Solanocrinus by Kiessling (2003).

It was assigned to Comatulida by Bataller (1940), Rasmussen (1961) and Sepkoski (2002); to Crinoidea by Kiessling (2003); and to Solanocrinitidae by Hess and Messing (2011) and Hess (2012).
