Amphipithecinae was named by Godinot (1994). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Kay et al. (2004).
It was reranked as the family Amphipithecidae by Jaeger et al. (2004), Kay et al. (2004), Marivaux et al. (2005) and Ducrocq et al. (2006).
It was assigned to Euprimates by Kay et al. (2004); and to Anthropoidea by Jaeger et al. (2004), Marivaux et al. (2005) and Ducrocq et al. (2006).
