Taxonomy

Bellerophon (Bucania) lyelli was named by Gemmellaro (1889). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rupe del Passo di Burgio, calcare compatto, Sosio, which is in a Wordian carbonate limestone in Italy.

It was recombined as Bucania lyelli by Wanner (1922); it was recombined as Bellerophon lyelli by Delpey (1941); it was recombined as Knightites (Retispira) lyelli by Yochelson (1960); it was recombined as Retispira lyelli by Rollins et al. (1971), Batten (1972), Nützel and Ketwetsuriya (2016), Mazaev (2019), Ketwetsuriya et al. (2020) and Wagner (2023).

Synonyms

Bellerophon sosiensis was named by Gemmellaro (1889). It is not a trace fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Retispira lyelli by Batten (1972).
Bucania nodulosa was named by Mansuy (1914).

It was synonymized subjectively with Retispira lyelli by Mazaev (2019).
Bellerophon (Bucania) sosiensis was named by Gemmellaro (1889). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pietra di Salomone, calcare grossolano, Sosio, which is in a Wordian carbonate limestone in Italy.

It was synonymized subjectively with Retispira lyelli by Batten (1972) and Mazaev (2019).
Knightites (Retispira) girtyi was named by Yochelson (1960). Its type specimen is USNM 119965, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is USNM703b, Old Word Ranch, Glass Mountains, which is in a Kungurian reef, buildup or bioherm limestone in the Cathedral Mountain Formation of Texas.

It was synonymized subjectively with Retispira lyelli by Batten (1972) and Mazaev (2019).

Batten 1972	Relatively small compressed shells, tightly coiled and widely phanoromphalus; spiral ornament consisting of two orders of fine ribs, unevenly, but closely spaced; coarse collabral ribs forming reticulation with spiral elements, some periodic undulations; selenizone flat and raised above whorl surface, with numerous spiral threads as on whorl; slit moderately deep; thin inductural deposits.
