Taxonomy
Bellerophon (Bucania) lyelli was named by Gemmellaro (1889). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rupe del Passo di Burgio, calcare compatto, Sosio, which is in a Wordian carbonate limestone in Italy.

It was recombined as Bucania lyelli by Wanner (1922); it was recombined as Bellerophon lyelli by Delpey (1941); it was recombined as Knightites (Retispira) lyelli by Yochelson (1960); it was recombined as Retispira lyelli by Rollins et al. (1971), Batten (1972), Nützel and Ketwetsuriya (2016), Mazaev (2019), Ketwetsuriya et al. (2020) and Wagner (2023).

Batten 1972Relatively small compressed shells, tightly coiled and widely phanoromphalus; spiral ornament consisting of two orders of fine ribs, unevenly, but closely spaced; coarse collabral ribs forming reticulation with spiral elements, some periodic undulations; selenizone flat and raised above whorl surface, with numerous spiral threads as on whorl; slit moderately deep; thin inductural deposits.
