Taxonomy
Mesoplodon slangkopi was named by Bianucci et al. (2007). Its type specimen is SAM PQ 2069, a partial skull (partial skull including the deeply worn rostrum base, the premaxillary sac fossae, and the vertex), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Slangkop, which is in a Miocene/Pliocene marine phosphorite in South Africa.
