Muregina was named by Vermeij (1998) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1272]. It is extant. Its type is Murex lugubris.

It was assigned to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ocenebrinae by Vermeij (1998) and DeVries (2005).
