It was reranked as Murex (Muricantha) by Vredenburg (1921) and Vredenburg (1925); it was reranked as Murex (Muricanthus) by Kojumdgieva and Strachimirov (1960); it was synonymized subjectively with Hexaplex by Vokes (1968); it was reranked as Hexaplex (Muricanthus) by Janssen (1978); it was corrected as Muricantha by Harzhauser et al. (2009).

It was assigned to Murex by Vredenburg (1921), Vredenburg (1925) and Kojumdgieva and Strachimirov (1960); to Hexaplex by Janssen (1978); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Muricidae by Todd (2001) and Harzhauser et al. (2009).
