Muricopsis was named by Bucquoy et al. (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Murex (Muricopsis) by Harris (1897).

It was assigned to Murex by Harris (1897); to Tritonaliinae by Givens and Kennedy (1976); to Muricopsinae by Wilson (1994); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Muricidae by Gardner (1947), Todd (2001) and Landau et al. (2007).
