Nassa was named by Röding (1798) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 122,926; NOTE: Authority stated as Lamack 1799 by Malumian et al. 1978.]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Buccinum (Nassa) by de Gregorio (1890).

It was assigned to Buccinum by de Gregorio (1890); to Drupinae by MacNeil (1960); to Thaididae by Ladd (1977); to Buccinidae by Malumian et al. (1978); to Nassidae by Martin (1904) and Gazdzicki and Pugaczewska (1984); to Thaidinae by Wilson (1994); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
