Nekewis was named by Stewart (1927) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes T Ol-l Sepkoski's reference number: 794]. Its type is Fasciolaria io.

It was assigned to Turridae by Turner (1938) and Durham (1944); to Turriculinae by Hickman (1976); to Tudiclidae by Zinsmeister (1983); to Perissityidae by Popenoe and Saul (1987) and Saul (1988); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
