Neptunea was named by Röding (1798) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 123]. It is extant. Its type is Eripachya ponderosa.

It was reranked as Trophon (Neptunea) by Oldroyd (1925).

It was assigned to Trophon by Oldroyd (1925); to Neptuneidae by Marincovich (1988); to Neptuneinae by Titova (1994); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
