Ocenebra was named by Leach in Gray (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 909]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Murex (Ocenebra) by Hörnes and Auinger (1885) and Tate (1888); it was corrected as Ocinebra by Bohm (1926); it was misspelled as Ocinebra by Dall (1889), Kensley (1972), Kensley and Pether (1986), Harzhauser and Mandic (2001), Harzhauser (2002), Sepkoski (2002) and Landau et al. (2007).

It was assigned to Murex by Hörnes and Auinger (1885) and Tate (1888); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Muricidae by Dall (1889), Bohm (1926), Kensley (1972), Kensley and Pether (1986), Harzhauser and Mandic (2001), Harzhauser (2002) and Landau et al. (2007).
