Phyllonotus was named by Swainson (1830) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 700]. It is extant. Its type is Murex imperialis.

It was reranked as Murex (Phyllonotus) by Maury (1917), Harris and Palmer (1947) and Gardner (1948); it was reranked as Chicoreus (Phyllonotus) by Vokes (1989) and Todd (2001); it was reranked as Hexaplex (Phyllonotus) by Harzhauser (2002).
